Resources
There are so many great resources available in the internet, it's hard to keep track of them all! Here is a collection of some activities and resources I've found online that I'd like to be able to use in my classroom someday.
Social StudiesHistorical Thinking Project: This website has a number of excellent tools that can be used in the classroom to help develop students to be historical thinkers. This critical approach to teaching history involves taking students beyond the final written product to consider alternative perspectives, examine evidence and think about how historical significance is determined.
Resource Distribution Simulation: This activity is a great interactive way to teach students about population density and the distribution of wealth around the world. It includes the statistical data for Brazil, Canada, Germany, Indonesia and Kenya and a breakdown of how it can be scaled for a class of 30 students. Canadian Parliament Simulation: This simulation would be great to use in an upper level (grade 10-12) socials studies or political science class. It is extremely detailed and provides scripting to help students assume the roles of a variety of different political figures; it even includes sample bills that students can debate, amend and try to pass in their mock-House of Commons/Senate. Historica Dominion: The Historica website is a great resource for teaching about Canadian history and culture. There are a number of videos that can be used in the classroom, including the full collection of memorable Heritage Minutes. Canadian War Museum: I found this website to be very helpful while teaching my Modern History unit on the First World War during my second field placement. It was a great resource for information about military arms and technology, propaganda posters, pictures and primary documents. The Teacher Resources section of the page even included some great lesson plans that could be adapted for use in the classroom. |
French Language ArtsLivres Ouverts: This website, run by the Quebec department of Education, is updated regularly with recommendations of French novels that can be used in the classroom. The advanced search criteria allows you to filter your results by grade level, FSL reading level, novel difficulty and novel type. This is a great resource for new teachers looking to add to their classroom library for FSL students.
Le Conjugueur: This a link to an online verb conjugation site. A great alternative to to the hard copy Bescherelle for the digital age. Word Reference: This online French-English dictionary also includes a list of popular phrases or expressions that may contain the word you are searching. Extremely useful to help students avoid translating expressions word-for-word. Bon Patron: This website is a great online French spell check tool that will catch a number of common French spelling and grammar mistakes. The best part is that it does not correct the mistakes for you, but instead offers advice and suggestions as to how the error can be fixed. This way, students who use the tool have the chance to review their work and learn from their mistakes. Bonjour de France: It can often be challenging to make learning grammatical concepts fun and engaging for students; however, this site offers a number of rally-racing games that help students practice the use of several grammatical terms. This website could be used as a sponge activity for students who complete their work ahead of others, or as a practice tool to help students review grammar concepts. TV5Monde: This is another great website with games aimed at helping students improve their french proficiency. There are a variety of activities to help students practice spelling, verb conjugation, punctuation and much more. Office québécois de la langue française: This website contains a variety of links provided by the Quebec government that can be very useful for French Second Language learners. Included is a linguistic database with simple answers to some frequently asked grammatical questions and a terminological dictionary for terms that may not appear in a standard French dictionary. |
