This book is a great resource for new teachers as it identifies some of the most common issues teachers experience throughout their profession. Not only does it give advice on how to handle difficult issues, but it also explains what steps can be taken to prevent these issues from occurring in the first place. The ideas and strategies presented in this book are applicable to all subject areas and grade levels. Beyond Discipline: From Compliance to Community
Alfie Kohn. 2006. Alexandria, VA: Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development
Alfie Kohn. 2006. Alexandria, VA: Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development
In his book, Kohn examines some of the traditional forms of discipline commonly used in the classroom and calls into question the assumptions behind these tactics. While Kohn's vision is less practical and more Utopian in nature, I do think it's a valuable read as it causes us to question why we choose to manage our classrooms in the ways that we do. Kohn also makes a compelling argument for a more student-centered learning environment and emphasizes the need for a greater focus on the moral development of students.

Lisette Ouellete. 2010. Montréal, Qc: Chenelière Éducation
This book is an excellent tool for new teachers to keep on hand to use throughout the school year. Set up in a question-and-answer format, it is easy to navigate to find practical solutions to a wide variety of issues that may arise within the classroom setting. What I found particularly helpful were the suggestions on how to motivate students, provide meaningful feedback, and how to engage parents in the learning process. As well, the author gives some great ideas as to how to establish a classroom management plan that fosters the cooperation and buy-in from students.

Gail E. Tompkins. 2006. Montréal, Qc: Chenelière Éducation |
Filled with a wide range of fun and exciting activities, this book has some great suggestions to help keep your students engaged while working with literature. Unlike your typical question-and-answer worksheets, these reading activities incorporate group work, art, drama and personal reflection to ensure students get the most out of their reading activities. The book is divided into sections with activities for students ranging from Kindergarten all the way up to the secondary school years. As a result, this is a great pedagogical guide for any teacher.

Lecteurs pour la vie: Insuffler la passion de la lecture chez les élèves de 9 à 12 ans
Donalyn Miller. 2010. Montréal, Qc: Chenelière Éducation
Donalyn Miller. 2010. Montréal, Qc: Chenelière Éducation
Throughout her book, Miller makes a compelling argument for the need to rethink the traditional approach to teaching literature in the school system. In order to help students connect with literature on a personal level, Miller encourages teachers to give students more choice in the books they read. Furthermore, she suggests that if the goal is for students to improve their reading skills, teachers need to provide more opportunities in class for students to simply read for their own pleasure. This approach to literacy seeks to provide authentic opportunities to help each student awaken their inner passion for reading.

The book also has a number of activity sheets and examples classroom signs that I could adapt for use in my own classroom some day.

Judith Dodge. 2006. : Scholastic Teaching Resources
Judith Dodge. 2006. : Scholastic Teaching Resources
One of my professional development goals is to continue working towards incorporating more differentiation in my instruction. I found this book to be an excellent resource for ideas and strategies as to how instruction can be differentiated to meet the diverse needs of all learners in the classroom. Particularly useful are the example activities suggested for different learning styles (auditory, visual and kinesthetic) and for multiple intelligences (verbal-linguistic, logical-mathematic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, spatial, naturalist and bodily-kinesthetic).
